Types of Water Damage Categories (Classes)

Water damage can be one of the most disastrous and expensive types of damage to a property. It can occur anywhere, at any time, and in various forms. Understanding the different categories (sometimes referred to as classes) of water damage is essential to be able to identify them promptly and take necessary steps to prevent the damage from persisting.

In addition, this information is crucial in choosing the best course of action to take for the water damage restoration process and how to properly file a claim with your insurance company.

Types of Water Damage Categories

Category 1 - Clean Water

Category 1 water damage can be caused by broken pipes, overflowing sinks or rainwater.

While there are low health risks associated with this type of damage, it is crucial to respond to the situation promptly, within 48 hours, to prevent more serious hazards.

It is important to note that ignoring water damage can lead to severe consequences and risks.

If left untreated for more than 48 hours, category 1 damage can become contaminated and progress into a category 2 damage situation and moreover lead to possibly mold . This type of damage may not only cause more issues but can also put your health and the health of others at risk.

Therefore, immediate attention and appropriate action are necessary right after damage occurs to prevent further damage or potential risk to your health.

Category 2 - Grey Water

The IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) defines grey water as wastewater that is generated from sources such as dishwasher/washing machine discharge and toilet containing urine.

Unlike black water, which contains fecal matter and other hazardous materials, grey water is considered to have a lower level of contamination. However, it may still contain harmful chemicals, organic matter, and bacteria that can pose health risks if not handled properly. Proper handling and disposal of grey water is necessary to prevent environmental contamination and uphold public health standards.

Category 3 - Black Water

According to the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification), “Category 3 water” refers to grossly contaminated water that is considered “black water,” meaning it contains potentially harmful agents like pathogens, toxins, or other hazardous substances, and can cause significant adverse reactions to humans if contacted or ingestedexamples include sewage, seawater, rising floodwater from rivers, and wind-driven rain from hurricanes.
