Protection: The first thing you need to do is protect yourself. This means putting on thick clothes and wearing gloves, at a minimum. Preferably, you should also take advantage of an oxygen tank to avoid breathing in harmful chemicals.

Ventilation: The next step involves ventilating your home by opening all windows and doors. If you’re lucky, it’ll be a windy day. If not, try to at least turn on a couple of fans to help speed up the ventilation process.

Cleaning: Here’s where things get fun. You need to clean everything, including but not limited to walls, fixtures, ceilings, doors, windows, floors, etc. Below are some tips that can help with this.

Use high-efficiency vacuum cleaners to remove soot from carpeting and upholstery.  Clean fine clothing via dry cleaning. Regular clothes and rugs can be washed in a washer/dryer, but make sure you use mild alkaline detergent.
Spray and/or pressure wash exterior paint, wood, brick, etc. walls from top to bottom. Use detergent if possible.

Odor Removal: Removing the horrible smell will require more than just ventilation. You’ll need to use deodorizing sprays, disinfectant sprays, aerosol sprays, etc. Unfortunately, this will only provide temporary relief.
