What is Mold Remediation & Mold Removal
Mold remediation and mold removal are sometimes used interchangeably; however, are not necessary the same. In both instances, containment areas are set up so that mold doesn’t spread while the mold abatement is being completed.
Mold removal in simple terms is removing contaminated contents and building material from your home.
Mold remediation is a process of testing, removing, cleaning, scrubbing, encapsulating and testing for mold spores again. Although mold spores can never completely be eliminated, a successful mold remediation process involves removing mold to a level that is safe for your health and your premise.
Is Mold Harmful

The answer is yes; some types of mold like black mold ( Stachybotrys chartarum ) can cause serious illness depending on the number of spores and exposure time.
Exposure to mold, especially black mold can lead to allergic reactions, respiratory problems, or other illnesses. For children, the elderly, and people with suppressed immune systems, this exposure can potentially be deadly.
The problem occurs when you have a water source from a roof leak or plumbing leak. High humidity sometimes caused by an a/c unit not functioning properly can cause mold to grow. When mold infests your home, if left untreated, it will multiply until the leak is fixed and mold is removed or remediated.
Signs of Mold
Mold can begin to grow on a moist surface within 24 hours. It can grow in places where moisture is regularly present, such as a bathroom, or in places affected by water damage, such as a flood. Wood, sheetrock, grout — all are places where mold can grow and multiply. So if your home has experienced any water damage, it’s vital to address the damage and eliminate mold right away.
Wondering whether your home might have a mold problem? Look for these signs:
- Musty odor — A persistent moldy odor is often the first sign of a mold problem.
- Discoloration — Mold can appear as dark spots on walls or ceilings, or discoloration on tile grout.
- Water damage — Signs of unwanted moisture in your home — such as water spots, leaky faucets, rust, humidity, warped wood, structural deteriorations, and bubbling or peeling paint — can all indicate the possibility of mold growth.
- Allergic symptoms — Exposure to mold can cause an allergic reaction, such as asthma, sore eyes, itchy skin, nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing and sore throat. If you feel better when you leave the house and worse when you return, you should check for mold.
